Dining Hall

by GP Architecture

The Project

This proposed 9,000 SF Dining Hall is a cornerstone of the comprehensive campus rebuild for the Shalom Institute in Malibu. Designed as a central communal hub, this state-of-the-art facility will provide a welcoming and efficient space for thousands of campers, retreat guests, and visitors year-round. Its contemporary design features expansive views of the natural landscape, a large outdoor deck for gathering, and a versatile interior to accommodate various dining and event configurations, embodying the Institute’s commitment to community, sustainability, and resilience.

Client Needs

The Shalom Institute required a resilient, high-capacity dining hall that would serve as the central gathering place for their revitalized campus. Key needs included a versatile space capable of accommodating diverse group sizes and meal services, fostering a strong sense of community, and reflecting the Institute’s deep commitment to sustainability and connection to nature. The design needed to be durable, efficient, and visually inspiring for a site recovering from fire, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all.

The Approach

Understanding Client Vision

GP Architecture’s approach to the Dining Hall began with a profound understanding of its role as the heart of the Shalom Institute campus – a place where community is built and values are shared. We collaborated closely to envision a space that would not only efficiently serve thousands but also spiritually connect users to the beautiful Malibu landscape and the Institute’s principles of togetherness, resilience, and environmental stewardship.

Creative and Sustainable Design

Our design for the 9,000 SF Dining Hall is a testament to both creativity and sustainability. The building is strategically oriented to maximize natural light and capture panoramic views through expansive glazing, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor dining. We incorporated a contemporary aesthetic with natural wood elements and a thoughtful material palette to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The design includes a prominent sloped roof ideal for integrated solar panels, reflecting the Institute’s “green” leadership, while the expansive outdoor decking extends the communal experience into the natural surroundings, fostering a deep connection to the environment.

Precision in Execution

Executing the design for a central facility of this scale within a comprehensive campus rebuild demands meticulous precision. Our team at GP Architecture is ensuring every detail, from the complex kitchen layout to the open-plan dining area and the robust outdoor decking, is meticulously planned for durability, functionality, and aesthetic quality. This precision ensures that the new Dining Hall will stand as a resilient, high-performance, and truly iconic centerpiece of the revitalized campus.
